5 Lions Reflect on Women’s Herstory Month

2018 lmu womens herstory month 620x465 - 5 Lions Reflect on Women's Herstory Month

As Women’s Herstory Month at Loyola Marymount University comes to a close, this year’s theme — “Nevertheless, She Persisted” — has inspired students to push forward in the face of adversity and resistance.

Co-sponsored by Marians Service Organization and ASLMU, Women’s Herstory Month celebrates women who have helped changed the world. The cross-campus celebration included events including lectures, documentary screenings and special guest speakers including Gretchen Carlson and Winona LaDuke and more.

Reflecting on the “Nevertheless, She Persisted” theme, which was adopted as a feminist phrase and utilized as a rallying cry, these five LMU students share their thoughts on the importance of Women’s Herstory Month:

On Hope

‘Nevertheless, She Persisted’ has always reminded me of the silver lining of life, that when things get dark, there is always a hopeful ‘nevertheless’ just around the corner.”

– Carly Johnson ’20, communication studies and theatre arts double major

On Achievement

Women have been overlooked and underestimated for centuries. Women’s Herstory Month gives us a designated time and space to appreciate the many achievements made by women throughout history, which is why it is so important.”

– Jaida Macklin ’20, English major, theatre arts and African American Studies minor

On Recognition

LMU needs Women’s Herstory Month to honor the women who work here every day. Some of the most thoughtful and personable women I’ve come across, I’ve met behind the register at the C-Store. Some of the most intelligent women I’ve met have been my professors here. All of these women deserve to be recognized.”

– Jalyn Eaton ’20, screenwriting major

On Persistence

Nevertheless, through all of the misogyny, oppression, harassment, objectification and assault, we will not stop persisting. We will not stop because we know that we deserve better and that our children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren deserve better.”

– Kris Corbett ’19, screenwriting and women’s & gender studies double-major

On Advocacy

Women’s Herstory Month should be just as important to men as it is to women; men can be allies to the movement and should use their positions of power to advocate for female empowerment and opportunity.”

– Ciara Freeman ’20, communication studies major
